QUARTERMASTER LEADERSHIP SERVICE PROJECT

Building communications capability for Flotilla 34.

My Quartermaster project is the design and installation of a 40-foot multi-band communications antenna mast at the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 base at Alsdorf Park Boat Ramp in Pompano Beach, Florida.

Build Weekend • Aug. 28–30, 2026

THE MISSION

A permanent communications system built to be useful when it matters.

The mast is designed to support MF, HF, VHF, and UHF radio communications and route those antenna connections into Flotilla 34’s radio room. Raising the antenna improves their ability to communicate beyond nearby obstructions and gives the Flotilla a stronger, infrastructure-independent communications capability.

THE BENEFICIARY + PARTNERSHIP

A project for the organization that helped Ship 238 get started.

US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 is Ship 238’s chartering organization. The project gives me an opportunity to lead a substantial service effort while creating a permanent capability for a partner that supports the Ship with training, mentorship, and maritime opportunities.

HOW IT WORKS

From the ground to the radio room.

01Build the base

Dig the mast sleeve location, add drainage rock and reinforcement, then form and pour the concrete base.

02Stabilize the mast

Use the building-side lateral support and antenna geometry to provide additional stability.

03Route the cable

Run protected conduit beneath the raised building from the mast location to the radio room.

04Connect + test

Terminate the antenna connections in the radio room and validate the completed communications system.
